When we discovered, completely by accident, that GIGABYTE was the OEM behind the RAZER Blade, we wondered when they’d be releasing their own thin and light gaming notebooks. While it’s been a bit of a progression, they finally released some extremely powerful variants under their AORUS brand name at COMPUTEX 2014. There was some trickle down because the P35 and P34 notebooks in their line up inherited some thin and lightness along with some powerful hardware. The GIGABYTE ‘Ultraforce’ P35X continues to push thin and light with even more powerful hardware.
The GIGABYTE Ultraforce P35X is the follow up to their original P35 notebook, continuing with the existing sandblasted, matte black, aluminum chassis design, that shows some design inspiration from their RAZER collaboration. But under the hood, the new P35X receives a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 8GB graphics upgrade that is capable of powering a new WHQH+ 15.6 inch wide-view panel which, by the sounds of it, is LED backlit IPS.
Further pushing the performance in this thin and light chassis weighing 2.2 kg, and is no more than 20.9mm thick, is the ability to run up to four drives inside. There is space for two mSATA SSDs up to 512MBs in size, and two more SATA HDDs up to 2TB in size. You can also RAID the two mSATA SSDs together for up to 1500MB/s in read peformance. One of the two SATA HDDs can also be hot swapped for an optical drive when needed. This would be an excellent setup for video editing allowing you to have your assets on one drive, with the ability to setup two more scratch volumes.
In terms of connectivity, you’ll get a mini DisplayPort for output to an external monitor up to 4K, USB 3.0 x Two, USB 2.0 x Two, HDMI, D-sub, RJ45, Mic-in, Earphone-out(SPDIF), SD Card Reader, and DC-in Jack. About the only thing missing is a Thunderbolt port.
