Though DDR4 compatible laptops are slow to trickle into the market, that hasn’t stopped manufacturers from releasing SO-DIMM kits for you to upgrade your brand new laptop on day one. One such manufacturer is G.SKILL, and they kinda buried the needle on the upgrade gauge with their most recently announced DDR4 SO-DIMM kit.
The latest G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR4 kit weighs in at a whopping 64GB, split across 4x16GB SO-DIMM modules. These kits also max out at a clock speed of 2800MHz, but due to some nifty features, they don’t necessarily need to run at those speeds. You see, the G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR4 SO-DIMM series features auto-overclocking.
Overclocking isn’t something you typically think of when it comes to laptops. The form factor tends to be too restrictive, and not able to handle the extra heat. However the auto-overclocking feature on the Ripjaws DDR4 SO-DIMM will automatically detect and set the rated overclock speed when the memory is installed on qualified systems. You don’t have to tweak the BIOS. Heat also isn’t a problem, as the Ripjaws DDR4 SO-DIMM requires only 1.2V to run.
