Intel’s 5th Generation Core series of CPUs, codenamed Broadwell, have been on the market for a while now, in the form of mobile processors. The biggest benefits of the design in the mobile space is of course improved power consumption, which improves battery life, and improved graphics performance. On the desktop front however, we’re expecting increased performance, power efficiency, and overclocking headroom. And thanks to ASUS, current H97 and Z97 board owners will be able to pick up a new broadwell processor, and use it right away.

ASUS has announced support for nearly their entire range of H97 and Z97 motherboards based on the LGA1150 socket. The boards do support the higher performance Maximus, Gryphon, and Sabertooth series, making investments in those boards a good one. Users just have to download and update their UEFI BIOS with the ASUS bios updater app, which is available from their suport website. Just pop in your board model and it should take you to the right place. Just make sure you hang on to your current generation chip so you can flash the board, before you sell it to pay for your broadwell upgrade.

With Intel’s “Skylake” platform coming down the pipe soon, with a new socket named LGA1151, this should give users that invested in the current LGA1150 platform a bit more performance in the meantime.

The full press release including models that will currently receive the upgrade as well as the exact BIOS versions you’ll want to get a hold of, are posted below.
