The mechanical hard drive continues to hold a place in our PCs and in our pockets. ADATA  is updating the HE720 portable HDD, the worlds slimmest portable HDD, by upping the ante on capacity.

The new ADATA DashDrive Elite HE720 comes in a 1 TB storage capacity while only being 8.9 mm thin. For a little perspective there is roughly 25.4 mm in an inch meaning the ADATA HE720 is less than half an inch thin. This puts this drive in the same size category as a Smartphone. The drive is connected to a single high-speed USB 3.0 port for the fastest in class transfer speeds. We’re not certain what’s inside, but we would assume that it’s either a 5mm or 7mm platter spinning away. Possibly a Hybrid SSHD from either Western Digital or Seagate, but we’d have to crack one open to know for sure.

The specs are nice and all, but you and I both know the coolest thing is the beautiful brushed aluminum casing. ADATA, take my advice and change the name of this portable drive to ADATA SexyDrive. Pricing has not been announced, but our Futurelooks Shopping Engine is saying around $79.99 US for the 500GB version so a good guess would be around the $120 US range. Full press release is below.

One of World’s Slimmest HDDs Gets an Upgrade

DashDrive Elite HE720 External Disk Drive Launched in One Terabyte Capacity

August 8, 2013 – ADATA™ Technology, a leading manufacturer of high-performance DRAM modules and NAND Flash application products, has made another advance in ultra-slim external hard drives with the launch of the DashDrive Elite HE720 in 1 terabyte capacity. The HE720 offers high speed data transmission through a USB 3.0 interface, and has a thickness of only 8.9 mm.

The chassis of the HE720 is made of highly reflective stainless steel and provides 9H grade scratch resistance, which prevents damage and marring even after long-term use. A gleaming LED indicator indicates power and data transfer status, accentuating the modern metallic lines of the drive body. The USB 3.0 interface offers transfer efficiency up to three times that of older USB 2.0 devices, but retains full backward compatibility with earlier versions.

In addition to being one of the world’s thinnest 1 terabyte portable hard drives, the HE720 comes with ADATA’s free “One touch backup” software, which allows for automatic backup and synchronization of data with one easy touch. Other free software available to purchasers of the HE720 include the company’s proprietary HDDtoGo, and the latest Norton Internet Security 2013 anti-virus software (60 day trial version).

The 1 terabyte version of the DashDrive Elite HE720 will be available through selected retailers and distributors.
