It almost sounds like a bad April Fools’ Day gag, except that it’s real. And it’s not particularly funny in any sort of “haha” sort of way. Yesterday, we learned of the new Asus Chromebit, offering you a full Chrome OS computer in a package the size of a flash drive. Today, we go to the other end of the scale with the new Acer Chromebase, an all-in-one PC powered by Chrome OS.
This follows in the emerging tradition of trying to fit Google’s Chrome OS platform into as many form factors as possible. You can already find several companies producing a Chromebox of some sort and the Chromebook line of laptops is steadily picking up steam. The Acer Chromebase extends that into the AIO PC space with an iMac-esque appearance.
The Acer Chromebase is not the first of its kind–LG made one a couple of years ago–but this one does come with a 21.5-inch touchscreen display with a 1080p resolution. As Google starts to make Chrome OS more touch-friendly and as more Android apps make their way into the Chrome OS ecosystem, that big touchscreen will start to come in handier. Other specs for the new Chromebase include the NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor and 100GB of Google Drive storage for a couple of years.
The rest of the specs are still a little up in the air, but those should get solidified–along with pricing–as we get closer to the Q2 launch window.
