If given the choice between less memory with higher speeds, or more memory, with lower speeds, I tend to go with the latter. Not that there’s anything wrong with having speedy memory modules. It’s just that when you’re someone, like myself, that has regularly sucked up more than 48GBs or more or physical memory, while rendering an extremely large video file, your priorities are different than someone that is breaking world benchmark records. If you’re like me, then you’ll like that Corsair is shipping 128GB DDR4 memory kits!
Corsair is currently announcing these new 128GB DDR4 capacities in their Dominator Platinum and Vengeance LPX series (shown above) of memory modules. The two Dominator Platinum kits will be offered in 2400/2666MHz speeds, while the Vengeance LPX will only come in 2400MHz speeds. Although there is probably some overclocking room in both kits, outside of their XMP 2.0 settings, I probably wouldn’t be overclocking with that much data loaded into memory. Especially if whatever you are doing is mission critical.
These 128GB DDR4 kits are definitely geared towards Intel X99 platform users. And with kits that sport 8x16GB configurations, it’ll definitely take advantage of the quad channel capabilities of your platform.
In terms of pricing, the Vengeance LPX 2400MHz 128GB DDR4 kit will go for $1754.99 US, while the Dominator Platinum counterpart will be $1979.99 US. The higher speed Dominator Platinum at 2666MHz will set you back $2119.99 US. You pay for the flashy heatsinks and the colored light pipes with the Dominator Platinums so there is a really good reason for their premium price. However, the low profile heatsinks of the Vengeance LPX will allow them to fit better in space challenged configurations with big heatsinks.
