Question from a reader:
"When you review routers with more than one WAN port, please comment on the following application. When I bought a NexLand 800 Turbo router I expected it to be able to handle two WAN ports coming from two different ISPs. I wanted this for redundancy so that if one vendor went down, the other would still be up and running.
Unfortunately, they (and the Hawking unit) only go half way. They DO automatic changeover for internet service but they do not handle outgoing eMail and Newsgroup outgoing email properly.
To do it right, designers have to consider that each outgoing email service (POP3 on port 25, IMAP on its port, and News Postings on port
119) must have different handling on each WAN port depending on which ISP it is being sent through. The mail server name, news server name, User IDs and User mail passwords will likely be different between the two ISPs and the router is the only system component that can map and route for these differences.
So far, I think only some Cisco routers and perhaps the Mikrotik router can handle this as it should be handled. But if you guys call this to the attention of users in your reviewers, SOMEBODY will integrate this feature into a SOHO router."
