Ooooh, I have a question:

I have a friend who wants to become a chef but has little experience outside of his own kitchen. What steps should he take so he can be a professional and work at a place that serves food to people?

Ok, I have a question...

How do you clean dishes? :P

a) Dishwasher?
b) Original Recipe (with hands)
c) Get the dog to lick the plates clean?

;P

on a related note, what's the best way to clean dough off a counter when the dough is pratically a paste? ?

My question is more of a cleaning question, does anyone know how to clean out a microwave after putting popcorn in for 30 minutes instead of the 3 I thought I was putting it in for.

The inside of my microwave is now a stained ugly yellow. I knew something was wrong when I started smelling smoke. On a positive note popcorn fused with a popcorn bag, doesn't really taste that bad :p

Amandabobanda,, to your friend who wants to be a chef,, I recomend him taking the Culinary Arts program at V.C.C. as well he should get himself some hands-on work in the industry. It will help him out in the long run

Amanadabobanda,, get yourself a pastry linescraper,, it is made of plastic so that it won't scratch your counters but helps you get the cookie dough off your counter

How can he increase his chances of getting a job in the industry now when he has no work experience in this area?

htower,,, your question is a hard one cuz I have never had to clean smoke out of a microwave,,,, I have to go and find out, ,I dunno know the answer to that!

tell him to go and apply as a dishwasher or even a cook,, some places train you how to cook even if you have no experience,, but he might have to start as a dishwasher and have to prove that he is worth training up to a cook. But give him this one piece of advice that I like to tell new people in the trade,,,, "you are never to good to do anything, no matter what position you hold"

That's ok, I just make sure no one sees me open the microwave door when people come over. I'm not known for my cooking prowess anyway, as you could probably tell :p

This COULD be considered off topic, but since it IS "Ask Chefboy" then I'll let it slide.

It really does sound like the beginnings of a good topic for "The Dating Game".

Chefboy, what does it mean if an ingredient is "divided"?
e.g., sour cream. Thanks :)

chefboy
December 14th, 2001, 12:40 AM
you have to be more specific,, divided to what?

RosieTulips
December 14th, 2001, 10:45 AM
If I knew, I wouldn't ask :disapprov :(

I've seen recipes where there's cream involved, and the list just says "1/2 c. cream, divided"

that would mean that they want you to measure out 1/4 cup twice,,, but have them in seperate dishes..

What's the point of that? waste of a perfectly good clean dish.

chefboy
December 15th, 2001, 02:40 PM
because they either want you to use half of it for something else,, or it is just how they want you to add the ingredients together!!
