I birwired mine so I've got like an effective 8 gauge or something? wallew January 17th, 2007, 12:33 PM Well, then I guess my wife and I are in trouble. About three Xmas's ago, we purchased a big screen TV for my MIL. We were sneaky about it. We told her we were going to purchase one for MY parents and we wanted her input. So we went to Ultimate Electronics and asked her which one SHE liked. After she looked them all over, she picked out a 52" Mitsu. So we said, "We'll take it. Deliver it to my MIL's apartment." She got that confused look and said she couldn't accept it. We told her it was a done deal. My MIL has macular degeneration. Her TV was a thirty plus year old CONSOLE model. If you are old enough you might have seen one A LONG time ago. Anyway, it was really crappy. She rarely watched it because it was so difficult for her to see with the macular degeneration. About a month after the NEW 52" big screen was installed, my wife called her mom and her mom said, "Can you call back, my favorite show is on right now!" We laughed so hard until the tears came. So we 'done good' for her mom. We did the same thing to my parents. Took them out to look at big screen TV's for Vivianne (my MIL). When they chose the 60" Hitachi, we once again said "We'll take it. Deliver it to my parents house." My parents TRIED to argue us out of it. We stood firm. We also told them we did the same thing to Vivianne and they HAD to take it. Otherwise we would have to figure out a more expensive gift. Since then, their place is THE PLACE to watch TV. All their friends come over and watch football (they live in West Texas), or movies or whatever. They are the 'party house', just like when I was a kid growing up and TV was the furthest thing from anyone's mind. Besides, what can you buy your aging parents? They've got just about everything else they need or want. And none of them would have purchased this for themselves, seeing it as a waste of money. Which it is and isn't. It's made life enjoyable to watch TV again for them. So it was a great present for both my parents and my MIL. We did this right when HD TV's were becoming the norm and regular big screens were put on close out prices. I think we paid less than $2k total for both of them with extended warranties and everything. So, if you've ever wondered WHAT to get your parents for Xmas, steal our idea, please. You won't regret it. Besides, now when we go over to either of their places, it's ENJOYABLE to watch TV at their place again. Which it had not been for a long time. Especially after we got our first big screen 53 inch no baloney Sony TV. Firewire January 17th, 2007, 12:37 PM That's brilliant. Way to earn points with the In-Laws! wallew January 17th, 2007, 01:52 PM My FIL passed 12 years ago. He was a hoot. A retired chef who was a cook in the Merchant Marines during WWII and for several years after. He then worked at several restuarants until he opened his own. He did that for five plus years and then was offered to sell it at a profit so he did. He went back to work for large hotel chains like Ramada. My MIL will do Tequila shooters with me TO THIS DAY! :yikes: How many of you out there can say that you do shooters with your 90 year old MIL? I can. I posted a picture of her in the Coffee shop. Her name is Vivianne and she is a hoot also. Funny, always has something nice and bright to talk about. And I think she misses her husband something terrible. So we try and make her days as fun as possible. At 90, she'll probably only be around another fifteen or twenty years, given medicine the way it's keeping us all alive longer.
