"The designers of Carrera\'s and Boxster\'s have teamed up with Samsung to bring you something so pretty and fast looking, you\'ll have to put on your safety belt. The Samsung SyncMaster 171P pushes the limits of design and carries it out with style that only F.A. Porsche can provide."

I purchased one Wednesday Nov. 6. I originally intended to buy the 172T, but it still has not shipped in Canada, and I hate waiting. The 171P and 172T have identical display specs.
Paid 1199 plus tax.
I love it and am spending TOO much time playing with it. I'm running mine in true digital mode (DVI) from an ATI radeon 9000 Pro. I don't see how the image could be any better.
In DVI mode, only one user control is available...brightness, which in fact adjusts the backlight luminence. The effect is like the contrast control on a CRT.

Ok, that was a test. I wrote a huge reply and it kicked me out! :(
Anyway, too make a long story short, I ever tested the DVI myself, I had friends do it for me and yeah, some of the menu, if not all were missing, so yeah, I think you are limited in functions. As far as the quality of picture when using the DVI, i think they are they same realy, but its better to test it yourself. My friend had it 171 hooked up to his 64 MB g-Force, and he said that when he was playing DvD's the DVI was better. ,
you got a good deal on that monitor. I still see it for 1299, not bad!:), anyway, anymore quetions let me know?,, how you like it so far?

The normal monitor controls that we associate with a CRT do not apply to a LCD running in digital mode. Only backlight illumination can be controlled. It is possible to set black level (true brightness) through my video card, but the default setting was correct.
In analogue mode, there is some noticable fuzziness of text at the outer edges of the monitor. Analogue mode is also not capable of reproducing 16.7 million colours... more like under 300, 000. There is a wealth of technical info available on LCD technology availble on Google. I figure I spent 30 hours researching the technology before I bought.
So far, I love it. It was expensive, but what the heck....

I definitely believe in LCD technology. My Dell Insprion notebook sports a 15" UXGA LCD screen capable of resolutions up to 1600 x 1200. I run it at the highest resolution all the time. I've been able to spend more time in front of my PC with this type of screen. In fact, I sold my 21" CRT monitor because I used my notebook screen way more than the 21" CRT. It is a lot easier on my eyes. If I buy another monitor, it will have to be an LCD with AT least 1600 x 1200 resolution support which means I'll have to wait a while and scrape those pennies ;)
Probably something like this...

Samsung 210T...whoeee! List price $6G, $3200 at compusmart.
Yeah that baby would definitely be the ticket. I would guess the price will fall below $3G early next year. Borrow the money <grin>.
I'm curious about your comment that you run your 15" LCD at 1600 x 1200. A fifteen incher would have a native resolution of 1024 x 768. Any other size than native means that the monitor must 'translate' the image, and my understanding was that this meant loss of detail. I have not actually tried to run my 17" at anything other than native 1280 x 1024. I'll give it a shot.

My display looks best at 1600 x 1200. My display has a much higher DPI than a regular screen. I think it is 133 dpi.

OK, Jo3box3r, I did not realize you were the author of the review, so I didn't understand your message about what we thought about the review. I'm new here and I don't know who's who. Well, it was a very good review, well organized and such.
I love the screen. I spent a day fooling around with fonts, colours, etc., but it is now absolutely perfect. When I get home after staring at my 19" Optiquest Q95 CRT at work all day, there is just no comparison, the 171P is a 100% improvement.
Very very small fonts suffer fronm a jaggedness which can be fixed in XP, but to my knowledge, that's the only Windows OS with 'cleartype' fonts. I'm presently using 98se, but now I have another reason to do a complete install of XP Pro. I may do that in December.
