View Full Version : What do you drive?

Welcome to "The Automotive Haven"!

Automobiles are stuffed full of technology. So why not have a forum about them? Let's start of with the classic question:

"What do you drive?"

I drive a 2000 Subaru Impreza Wagon with full underbody armor. When I'm not getting the groceries, I'm rallying with it on the weekends. Check out a couple of my rally articles below:

If I could I'd buy the WRX, although if I had more money I'd just skip it all together and go with the Mercedes Benz CLK-55 AMG Convertable. :)

I drive a 2001 civic si. It's not bad. Far too underpowered, when I bought it my buget was way different then what it is right now.

If I were to do it all again I would buy an Impreza wrx. It pisses me off so much because I can actually afford it but because I bought the civic there is no way I can trade it in without losing the shirt off my back and walking away feeling violated

Don't get me wrong I like my car, I just don't love it.

Whoever posted about owning an Si and being all upset that they'd have to lose cash to sell and buy the WRX.

Screw that idea! I've got a 99 SiG and I found the solution to your problem.

I know your Civic is a 1.7 liter unlike my 1.6 but I'll bet the supercharger from Jackson Racing can give you some serious bolt on power. At least 60+ hp.

With the extra $14,000ish you'd have spent to get the WRX use it to put on headers, exhaust, supercharger, tighter suspension and bigger wheels with smaller rubber.

You'd have a beautiful street demon pushing about 215+ hp in a lighter car.

That's my two-bits.

P.S. All you WRX fans... save the flaming for someone who gives a damn. I respect that the Rex is a good car - just not my choice.

:monkey:

Uhhh.... That's great way to destroy your warranty! I don't think Htower would want to do that being that the car is so new.

PLUS, with all the boarding he does in the winter, the AWD and 227 HP stock, not to mention a fully intact 3 year bumper to bumper warranty, why would he want to spend $14,000, plus extra's (there are ALWAYS extra things that happen when modding) to upgrade his car and void the precious warranty? With all WRX fanaticism aside the pain and suffering is just not worth it wouldn't you agree?

chefboy
January 1st, 2002, 10:55 PM
yeah,, I would like to play around with my car,,but then I got to thinking,, that it isn't really worth it! there are som amny cars on the market now that come stock with a lot of toys and goodies :D

it all depends on how much you wanna spend at the dealership!!

KGB
January 2nd, 2002, 12:51 PM
For me, I haven't found a car that I truly like - not even the new WRX. Maybe the STi or if I have the money, the M3. Modding my RS it is.

htower
January 2nd, 2002, 01:39 PM
dlopez, you might want to do a bit of research. Thanks for the suggestion though.

There aren't any superchargers or turbochargers that have been made for the 7th gen civics. Unless I want to go custom (which wont happen). Even if they eventually did make one I'm not gonna void my warantee.

Bolt on i/h/e doesn't give the same +hp like they used to in the 6th gen civics. I've read results of dc sports i/h/e giving only +5hp total. Thats too expensive for very little gain.

With the extra $14,000ish you'd have spent to get the WRX use it to put on headers, exhaust, supercharger, tighter suspension and bigger wheels with smaller rubber

I want a car that I can make my monthly payments on and enjoy as is. I don't want to spend money on a supercharger, suspension, etc, etc, etc.

My civic is fun, I like driving it, its a good first car for me but I'll be moving on to something better(IMHO) soon.

dlopez
January 6th, 2002, 04:39 PM
I was thinking about my car when I made the post. I was also thinking about the way I use my car.

I absolutely agree that in light of the fact that the 2001 car has lots of warranty left and that he uses it offroad somewhat that the Subaru WRX would be a better choice.

In my situation though the story is different...

My car is out of warranty this year anyways.
There IS a bolt on supercharger for my 1999 SiG.
I use my car as a street machine, not off-roading.

In stock form the Civic is 400 pounds lighter than the WRX and easily made even lighter than that. It is also very cheap to stiffen up the body of the Civic. With these done, the Civic has a much nicer "no-understeer" feeling that the WRX will in stock form.

I like quick stints on the streets and the odd 0 - 100kmh dash against other cars. I will also take a buzz along the highway or a curvy backroad. Until we really open up the Subaru's power is not where I want it for how I use my car.

Plus: I did not suggest he spend $14,000 extra... but rather that he had at LEAST that much room before he even touched the Subaru's price tag. The mods I described could be done much cheaper than that.

The supercharger is the most expensive add-on... I got a price of under $3500ish for it. Only a couple hours labor to install.

You guys did make some very good points... I guess to each his own.

Cheers, Dylan.

dlopez
January 6th, 2002, 04:47 PM
BTW: 5HP is not normal for a good intake, header and exhaust combo.

I found some combinations that will typically add 12 - 15 hp.

A friend of mine did a combo found in an Import Tuner mag and got the exact results they did... in this case 15 hp.

Cheers, Dylan.

htower
January 7th, 2002, 10:21 AM
Yes, this is a poor performing i/h/e combo, but I was just trying to make the point that the days of 20hp civic bolt ons are gone(for the 2001 at least). They made some changes between the 6th and 7th gen civic that make it more difficult to add hp through i/e specifically.

" I guess to each his own"

Exactly :)

dlopez
January 7th, 2002, 05:46 PM
Sounds like my 1999 is going to pay off. I haven't heard too many good things about the latest civics.

What are the main changes? I've been wondering what else they did..

Hey what do you think of the new Acura Integra replacement?

Cheers, Dylan.

htower
January 7th, 2002, 06:15 PM
I like the look of the old Integras better but it seems like a nice car. I've read some good reviews of the type-s.

The 2001 civic is about the same size as the old one. Except the nose is shorter and the cabin is longer. It's a 1.7 litre engine now. I think the hp remains the same at 127. The new engine also meets California ULEV(ultra low emissions vehicle) standards. I think the 2001 has a bit more tourque but I can't remember the numbers off hand.

It has a MacPherson strut in front and double wishbone in the rear. Both were double wishbone in the 6th gen civic I believe.

The ride is ok, the back end tends to bounce around a bit when you go over a bump, I'm not pleased with that.

KGB
January 7th, 2002, 08:53 PM
And the header + cat combo on the 7th gen. Essentially you need to have a new cat when you put in new header. With the tight emissions these days, it's gonna cost you an arm and a leg to get back to 100HP/L. Well, maybe BMW Valvetronic can trickle down to the Japanese manufacturers...

dlopez
January 9th, 2002, 11:33 PM
I'm not sure I like the shorter nose, I don't want more cabin space personally. I knew the car was a 1.7 liter with 127hp and I think you are right about the torque... how much more though I can't remember either.

You are right re: the double-wishbone.... The MacPherson in the Acura Integra replacement (can't remember the model name now.. mdx or something) is suppose to have really helped the suspension. Why your 2001 bounces in the rear-end is beyond me.... I don't think I've ever consciously noticed that in my '99.

Personally what I do like about the 7th gen is the option to exclude the side body mouldings - I had to paint mine. I also think the rear lights are pretty cool... a bit more 'expensive' looking. There are some aspects of the new styling though I'm 'iffy' about.

After I dump some cash into my car this year it wont even be a civic anymore anyways :-) I was thinking about doing an engine swap but I'm not sure about the cost. I'd probably fetch an okay price for my current engine because it's in great shape.

Ack, I'll probably stuff the engine swap idea and just go with a couple basic combos and the Jackson Racing Super...

Remember - I don't care about my warranty <grin>

Cheers, Dylan.

htower
January 9th, 2002, 11:49 PM
I was kinda iffy on the body style too, except I ended up getting the OEM body kit and OEM rear spoiler also. I think it looks way better with it.

I'm not the only one thats noticed the rear end bouncing, my friend has a 2001 dx and he's noticed the same thing. My mom has a 97 civic dx and I never noticed anything like it in her car. I don't notice it everyday, just every so often.

The whole shorter nose thing kept screwing me up when I was trying to park. I was used to my moms car so I'd pull in like I used to, get out and notice that I was like 2 feet away from the curb :p
