Blur-ray vs. HD-DVD, Sony/Philips vs. Toshiba, which would you choose? THe choice for me is obvious, Blu-ray. It offers more features than HD-DVD that please me like disc capacity and transfer speed. Both use the same kind of wavelength blue-violet laser but their optic differ in two ways, track pitch where Blu-ray's is more tight HD-DVDs. A tighter track pitch means more data squeezed together thus offer more data storage.

On the negative side Blu-rays are more costly to produce since the surface layer is smaller whereas a HD-DVD uses the same size surface thickness compared to a DVD. This requires production facilities to be modified or replaced in order to produce Blu-ray discs.

Even though Blu-ray discs are more costly overall their capacity makes up for it where the HD-DVD discs lacks.
