I'm going to be honest here. I didn't know the difference between the two or that even HD DVD even existed three hours ago. Of course I had heard of Blu-ray technology, I think most people have but, but I had no idea there was a point of contention between the two. So what did I do? I googled it and read all about it. For this reason, this review will be written from the stand point of a DVD war noob.
After reading several pages on the subject, I'm reminded of the old VHS vs. Beta days. That's right kids, the word Beta wasn't always a term used for testing software. It once was a form of home entertainment and one that is still used in television studios.
Much like the VHS vs. Beta war this modern war over DVD technology seems to be up in the air as to where the money will be. I'm not sure how or where this number came from but it seems the current battle is being waged over what format will companies produce a player under the $500 range. The only question is, will more consumers purchase a cheaper player or will the type of consumer that cares enough about his/her home entertainment be willing to pay more for the best quality picture and audio available.
It seems the film studios have a part in this war as well. It's a no brainer that the studios are going to go with the whichever format comes out on top, but apparently the film studios themselves may have a hand in steering the way before the consumers get the chance. Much like the war that I wrote about earlier between Betamax and VHS, the multibillion-dollar adult entertainment industry has decided to adhere themselves to HD DVD already. This industry is the reason that VHS quickly became the most used format in home entertainment in the 80s.
Please tell me that the most decorated soldier in this war will not be the likes of Ron Jeremy....please.
