First of all Blu Ray is somewhat of a misnomer because the laser is more of a violet color than blue. Blu Ray has more storage capacity, so that's one thing it has going for it. However the standalone players are somewhat expensive.
HD DVD players are more affordable. Wal-Mart recently sold a Toshiba model for the very low price of $98.00.
Both formats are trying to attract buyers with a five free movie mail in rebate offer. Toshiba goes one step further by packaging an additional two free with its HD DVD players.
When comparing the two formats side by side, the image quality and sound are virtually identical. I personally believe HD DVD has the advantage with its lower priced players, and to most buyers that's what it comes down to.
