What the hell is Chai and why does it taste so sweet? I've been having the occasional chai tea latte these days whenever I come across a Starbucks. I found out that Chai Tea is a black tea. Tastes very sweet.

Chai means tea in about a million different languages... It's just tea... Nice marketing on the part of ol' Bucky!

It's a little more than just black tea... In India (where it originated, it's black tea with heavy milk, various spices (traditionally fresh cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, peppercorns), and sweetener. The reason it's sweet is because you have to have sugar to bring out the flavor of the spices.

The best place for Chai, IMHO, is the tea place in the Granville Island Public Market. Yum.

I finally coaxed them to tell me their secret for making the stuff taste so smooth. Mix the powder into a roux with butter! Yum yum.
