View Full Version : What is a Crazy Amount to Spend on a Set of Headphones?

I love music. I love quality. I was going to spend as much as it took to get into a set of great headphones. I've had extremely high end headphones before, but since my sources are now mainly PC's, I decided that it wasn't worth spending that much on a set of headphones that would reveal every flaw in the source that you were using.

Instead of spending like $350 bucks like last time, I spent $150 on a set of SONY MDR-7506 headphones. I actually haven't bought a SONY headphone in a long time as I'm typically a Sennheiser or Ultrasone guy. I listened to them in the store and was really impressed with the amount of detail, clarity, and openness that they had. They weren't warm, but they weren't harsh, and for $150, I couldn't complain. The only downside is that I'm really noticing how much noise a PC adds to the signal with its pops, beeps and hissing in the background. None of my other headphones/headsets reveal this.

My next step is to probably buy a headphone amplifier to power them. Maybe the Total Bithead Pro from Headphone.com. It uses an onboard DAC to move the sound processing outside the box via USB which cleans up a lot of that noise. I guess this will bring me back to $350, but it should upgrade both my source and give my headphones some good amplification.

Does anyone have a headphone story or revelation they'd like to share?

No, not really. LOL. Koss, Sansui are the headphones I've had as far as I can recall. I've never spent over $120 on a set.

It got some Logitech headphones from your local "Saving Place" and spent $14.95 for them. I'm happy with them.

Believe me, once you cross the line that seperates great sounding headphones from ones that merely do the job, you can't go back. I'm finding that it can be achieved lower than it used to (at $50 things start to sound quite reasonable). Even if you don't buy them, it is fun to check out the truly high end to fully realize what you're missing out on or not depending on how deaf you are ;)

You're getting a headphone review as soon as I can get you one

I seriously have never spent more than $10 on a pair of headphones, but I can see why some people would want to spend more. I would, if the quality made it worthwhile.

I think it was Panasonic that I heard that has some great headphones on the market today. I have never spent a buttload of money on headphones. I always go as cheap as possible since I use them only at work.

I'd imagine that at work, really nice headphones would just get stolen or something.

I haven't tried a Panasonic headphone in ages. They don't typically get associated with good or high end audio. Technics on the other hand, which is one of the Panasonic brands, does make some very good studio monitor/DJ headphones. I did see some RETRO looking ones that were kind of cool. Looked like they were out of the 70's with the wire headband and plastic ear cups. Sort of like what the guys at the airport use.

Oops. I lied. I forgot that I has bought Panasonic headphones to go with my Sony Discman, as the ear buds that came with the 2nd from top end Discman sucked major ass and hurt my ears. Small ear canals. They were something like $29.95 plus tax and on sale. They work fairly well.

cheap earphones that kinda work as well as and Ipod one, but half the price with free shipping. And no, i'm not advertising for that site.

Seriously, If your going to pay $150 for headphones, may as well add another $20~30 for a Sennheiser, which kicks the stuffing out of Sony. Then again, if you forked out that much, you should've made sure it had good bassboost.

Wow, those are dirty cheap! Though for some reason, when a performance product uses "Trendy" or "Stylish" in the name, I just can't seem to take it seriously.

The SONY's I got are actually industry standard in the FILM and MUSIC industry. The music that people listen to or the movies that we watch might have actually been mastered on these EXACT headphones. I was quite pleased when I found that out. I was actually looking for them during Canadian Idol and I saw everyone wearing them in one of the Idol hometown segments. After about 100 hrs of burn in, they are really starting to sound good and quite warm.

I am a fan of Sennheisers as well, but the ones I really wanted were the HD-650's...at $500 bucks. I've actually owned and tried many of the headphones below the HD-650's in the Sennheiser line. But at the $150 price point, I felt the SONY had a better offer this time around. I tend to steer clear of bass boost because it really exaggerates the real audio coming from a track that you are listening to. I prefer a more natural presentation.

Those prices are awesome, but I've never heard of them before. Are they a reputable store? Do they deliver what and when they say they do?

Ex-Musician ears. I actually know what instruments sound like in real life so that's what I look for when I buy headphones. If I don't find the sound quality that I'm looking for, that makes me a very sad panda :p

Sorry, I fall into the same (somewhat;low level audiophile) but non musician as you do. I will be the least "coloured" music reproduction that I can, leave the bass boost off (unless it's a great bass song and I want my sub-woofer to stretch its legs) play my music at a reasonable level. Presence, depth, separation and clarity of music are far more important to me than decibel level and booming bass. I like some of the groups today because they have orchestral accompaniment backstopping them gives so much more depth and lushness to the songs.

I'm not to much of a sound buff, and considering my poor hearing, I couldn't tell you the best set of headsets. But I recently took the plunge on a pair of headsets that normally retail for $150. Found them on Tigerdirect for ~$120 after shipping. Got myself a pair of Tritton AX360s. They're sorround sound headphones with built in rumble and a detachable microphone.

Currently they're plugged into both my computer and my 360 (they have a box that switches between device) and except for the low bass (which is sopposed to be made up by the rumble, which, actually DOES do a convincing job, but only after getting used to it!) I feel almost (they weren't free? lol) completely satisfied with them. Absolutely a great pair of headphones for gamers (who aren't overly anal audiophiles!) I'd say!
