My ipod nano has been finicky from day one. I had to reset it (the action where you don't lose files or settings) a few times within a few months of getting it as a gift. Then, when I returned from an extended trip, it wouldn't even turn on! I tried charging the batteries...nothing. I finally reset it, only to have it turn on and display a folder with an exclamation point. I ended up having to restore it, losing all my files and settings. Arrrrgh. My brothers ipod has been the same way...he had to send it back to the factory to be repaired, at one point. Has anyone *not* had so many problems?

No. You're not the only one. I've never been impressed with the questionable hardware. My GF got one, and it was totally screwed up out of the box. It got better when we updated the firmware.

hm... I've only had the problem of not using it for days, and then once I power it up, I get the apple logo. I think that's standard though. The only real problem is that the battery blows.

Yeah, I've been having problems with my battery too...it never wants to hold a charge! I refuse to send it in until I have to though: I got my iPod six months ago, so if I want to send it in, it costs about $30 for shipping. Yeah right. I'll just talk to my friends who work at the Apple Store and see what I can get that way. I should at least be able to save on shipping or something when I take it directly to the store.

I'm not surprised. I've heard some very flakey battery stories.

Everyoneelse has the good tech, but only Apple has the style. :(

I have also had problems with the battery. My 12 year old son has one and if he lets it sit for a day he has an issue.

If you warranty your iPod, Apple ships you a postage paid box, so you don't have to worry about paying for shipping :)
As for battery, I once thought I had battery problems - pretty much everyday the battery would die... however, it turned out that I had the alarm feature set to turn on the iPod daily, and when it does, it won't turn off by itself until it drains the battery.. Heh heh.

I guess there are things that actually drain batteries quicker than an iPod (ex: portable cd players, heh). I found that when I turned off the backlight or set it to the lowest setting, the batteries lasted much longer. Turning off those "beeps" probably helps a bit, too.

Interesting to know; my friend has one, and I can't recall him saying that he had batteries problem :\

He must be one of the lucky ones, Slashmire ;)
I can't complain too much about it though...I'm a sucker for aesthetics, and I can't get over the sleekness of my nano. And the ability to plug all those iPods into stereo systems now makes me feel better about the battery issue also! lol.

Yeah, Apple suffers from severly inconsistent hardware. Just today, I read in the news that they are totally getting grilled for poor work conditions in their factory in ShenZhen. Though nothing has been found yet, they are being pounded from all sides. I guess inconsistent players are the worker's way of spitting in your burger.

Shen Zhen? Where's that?

It's in China, near Hong Kong. It used to be Ocean before they filled it in.

Our 3 girls each have an Ipod Mini. One of them has had problems from the start (hers is the 6g and it's pink). Thank goodness for Apple Care... we've had to get a total replacement 3 times (in less than 2 years). The one with the blue 6g only has issues with it holding a charge. And the daughter with the silver 4g has had no problems...

We had a sealed 1 gig nano sample come through. It was screwed up out of the box requiring several reboots and a firmware flash to get it to work right. Some really bad quality control with these devices.

Apple should be kicked for charging so much for their players. Look what Sandisk just did:

I just sent in my son's shuffle bought refurbed 8 months ago, and my Nano which died after only 2 months. Apple didn't charge me a dime for shipping and the shuffle was reported on Sat.- they overnighted a new one and we had it and a box to ship my nano back in on Monday. Outstanding customer service!! Personally, I'd send the thing in and quit messing with it.

CrimsonPetals is correct on this. If you wait too long, you miss getting the problem logged, and if you forget, you'll forfeit your right to warranty.
