Tried and true is the online gaming experience, ranging from fantasy worlds of knights and dragons to sci-fi cyberscapes full of technology and danger. Each game molded by different ideas and goals, making each unique in their own way. There have been attempts at anarchic open play games, but most of them have failed miserably. Well, that is until Second Life.

Welcome to a game where there are no goals or boundaries unless of course you make them. So what do you really do in this game? The technical answer is whatever you want; the common answer is build stuff. You can really build whatever you want. The game has its own easy to learn scripting language which allows for endless possibilities. So you want a dream home made of glass and full of beautiful oak? Build it. Want a monster drum set suspended neatly above your pool? Build it. Whatever you want should be theoretically possible!

Character Customization

When I first entered the game I was immediately and completely overwhelmed by the vast number of customization options for my character. I fealt the urge to make my character as lifelike as possible. It’s almost sickening how many different sliders and different aspects of your character you can change. You can raise and lower the eye brows, change the space between your characters eyes, effect how the eyes are slanted, the size of the eyes, the form of the lips, the size of the ears, the position of the ears, the length of your characters arms, and on and on and on. You could honestly spend a few hours just customizing your character. Some players may prefer to choose an already defined character and then go back to customize their characters looks when they’re ready.

Remember, you don’t have to appear human. Wanna be gumbi? Just slant the crap out of your head, be green, and make the other required alterations! It doesn’t stop with your physical appearance, though. You get to customize all your clothes and accessories too! From loose dust-breaker jackets to tight green leather pants. Whatever you want. You can even set the texture of the things you’re making!
