Running from June 13 - 15 this year in Taipei, Taiwan, the
Display Taiwan Expo
showcases technology from the country’s massive Flat Panel Manufacturing
Industry. This show takes place right after the massive
COMPUTEX Computer Show which is literally a couple days earlier. I'm
always amazed at how quickly shows in Asia can be torn down and setup. I guess
that is what happens when your crews can work 24 hrs straight.
I love flat panels (who doesn't?) so I was really looking forward to seeing where flat panel technology was
headed in Taiwan. Afterall, with a name like "Display Taiwan" I expect to see
displays of...displays! This year's Display Taiwan would also be home to “Opto-Taiwan”, “LED Lighting
Taiwan” and the new “Solar Taiwan” exhibitions. Though that was nice and all, I
was there for the flat panels.
Dude! Where Are My Massive Flat Panels?
As I learned quickly at Display Taiwan, flat panels come in all sorts of
shapes and sizes. Even LCD projectors were part of what makes up “Display
Taiwan”. Major corporations like AUO, CMO, CPT, WINTEK, Mitsubishi Taiwan, EPSON
Taiwan, 3M and Corning were all on hand to show off their supporting
technologies.

As one of the big flat panel manufacturers in Taiwan, CMO showed off their
latest technologies like Extreme Contrast (aka High Dynamic Contrast) and Full
1080p HD 120 Hz panels. These technologies are often licensed and manufactured
into products that come from well known big brands. They weren't the only
company displaying these new technologies as other manufacturers had similar
competing technologies on display as well.
Display Taiwan is to Manufacturers,
what CES is to Consumers. This is the place that companies get their ideas and
their toys to build the products that eventually become our toys. Of course,
with different manufacturers providing similar technologies, even Manufacturers
can barter. CMO was also the only exhibitor to employ booth babes.
Actually, only one booth babe so she was very busy.

Coatings and glass are serious business when it comes to flat panels. That’s
why 3M and Corning were on hand to show what they’ve done to improve the clarity
of our flat panel displays. 3M was displaying two technologies that will make
laptop users very happy. The sticky note people developed a new coating for the
panels that is thinner, tougher, and allows the panel to display more light with
less power. They also showed off another coating that makes dust a thing of the
past because it doesn’t create static. Both are important to laptop users
because power consumption is important and screens tend to get very dusty on the
road.
