Plantronics has been
in the headset business for a very long time. In fact, the first words from the
moon in 1969 (or not, if you're into conspiracy theories). What is for real is
that a Plantronics headset is probably on the head of that customer service rep
that you call to complain about your (fill in the blank) bill. With all that
experience, Plantronics has learned many things including the fact that not
everyone’s ears are the same and that sound quality and clarity matters.
At CES 2007, they demonstrated a new technology called Audio-IQ by throwing
me in a sound chamber and locking the door. They gave me one of their new
headsets and injected large amounts of background noise into the chamber. While
I was locked inside, they taunted me through the headset. The noise was starting
to get loud, yet I could still hear the engineer telling me that he wasn’t
letting me out till I promised him a good review. Their demo really punched the
point home about their Audio-IQ technology which brings out incoming speech and
reduces outgoing background noise by up to 50%. I was impressed.

After the show, I received an apology note for the harsh treatment and a
production model of the Audio-IQ enabled Plantronics Discovery 665 bluetooth headset. Can
we replicate the demo experience here in the real world? Let’s find out!

What’s in the Box?

The Plantronics 665 comes with the following goodies:
- The Headset of course
- Charging Pocket
- Car charger adapter
- USB Charging Cable
- Small, Medium and Large Gel Ear Tips
- Ear Loop

Without a home plug charger, you can see that Plantronics clearly outfitted
the 665 for automobile use. This isn't so bad considering that one of the
noisiest environments is the vehicle with all sorts of road noise and the stereo
going. In keeping with Plantronics' commitment to great fit, the 665 comes with
three earpieces, and an ear loop for a more secure fit. These pieces can also be
adapted to left ear and right ear users.
