COMPUTEX 2007 Spotlight - OCZ Technology

  Submitted: 06-05-2007

 Summary:
OCZ has been having another successful year with some exciting announcements. Traditionally a memory company, OCZ has shown leadership in more than just RAM and USB Flash Drives. Let's see what they have in store for us at COMPUTEX in Taipei!

We flew across the ocean and endured the jungle like humidity of Taipei to see what exciting products our friends at OCZ Technology had in store for us here at COMPUTEX 2007. After reviewing their product line, it is clear that OCZ is gunning for some product leadership in areas that are not the norm for your regular Memory Company.

The OCZ Firewire Flash Drive

OCZ was showing off some very early prototype concepts at the CeBit show earlier this year but finally brought in some working prototypes at COMPUTEX 2007 that will be fairly close to the production units when released later this Q3 2007 in quantity. The advantages of going with Firewire vs. USB include uninterrupted streaming data transfers and transfer rates of 45 - 50 MB/s read and 40 - 45 MB/s write speeds. The OCZ Firewire drives will be available in 2 GB - 16 GB capacities when they hit the shelves. Pricing is TBA.

The Neural Impulse Actuator

A Neural What? OCZ was demoing their new toy that they say will totally revolutionize the way you game with your PC. The devices uses 11 signals from neural impulses to replace most keyboard and mouse functions. The permutation of brain, face muscle, and eye movement allow the NIA to do it's thing. Jason from TechWareLabs demonstrates how stylish it is and even manages to pull down a few frags.

After demoing it for myself, my impressions of the device were positive. Even after a few minutes, I was able to control my character with reasonable accuracy while engaging in an Unreal Tournament Deathmatch. The impulse to click mouse buttons and reach for the keyboard was intense, but with enough practice I could see this adding a totally different dimension to the game as you can look around and shoot and move without ever touching a keyboard.

OCZ is still tweaking the software and the training programs, but once that's completed, you'll be able to check out a unique gaming experience for yourself very soon.
