Nyko Intelligent Remote for the Xbox 360 Reviewed

  Submitted: 03-18-2007

 Summary:
For those of us using the Xbox 360 as the core of our entertainment system, a remote is a must. Nyko was very confident that we'd like what they had to offer. With the unique ability to "learn" remote functions, this remote promises serious control. How will it stack up? Let's find out!

My CPU is a neural net processor, a learning computer.

With all the different third party remotes that are available for the Xbox 360, Nyko decided to add its own unique take on things. Gone are the usual device codes and in their place a unique "learning" function. Let's see if it's a gimmick or the real deal.

In The Box

Inside the easy to open clear plastic packaging comes the Nyko Intelligent Remote 360, the instruction manual, but where are the batteries? Unfortunately, it's batteries not included with this new toy. Oh well...

Setting It Up

Love at first infrared transmission?

This "learning" function allows the user to program 23 different "learning" keys with the functions of his choice. Regardless of the remote manufacturer, or device specs, one has to simply press the required button, and the Nyko remote does the rest.

Although programming each individual key was a little tedious in comparison to entering a simple code, the versatility gained is well worth the trouble. This is the first remote I've tried for the Xbox 360 that was able to successfully control my AV system, my TV, as well as my 360.

The Verdict

Overall, although there is nothing particularly groundbreaking about the design, this remote gives you some major league customizability at a minor league price; under $20 bucks according to our REAL TIME price check. With only a few more "learning" buttons, the Nyko Intelligent Remote could be exceptional, but for now, it's still my remote of choice.

The Good

  • Can learn any key you want it to with just a push of a button
  • Works for a wide variety of devices
  • Sturdier construction than most other third party remotes

The Bad

  • Programming the individual buttons can be slightly tedious
  • Batteries are not included

The Ugly

  • There are many useful keys that you cannot program (i.e. the directional pad). If all the keys had been programmable, this thing would have been unstoppable!

Overall: 8.5/10.0
