Nyko Multi-Reader 360 for the Xbox 360 Reviewed

  Submitted: 03-11-2007

 Summary:
Almost every device these days seems to be USB connected and use some sort of storage card. Nyko wants you to connect them all to your Xbox 360 and to forget about your PC. Will the 360 be able to handle the pressure? Let's check it out!

Of all the Xbox 360 devices that NYKO let us preview at CES 2007 , this was one of the most innovative. It really speaks to the thinning barrier between your PC and your console. With the USB support, the 360 has opened the door to all types of "PC style" peripherals. Although the Xbox 360 isn't quite there as far as flexibility and recognition goes, the Nyko Multi-Reader brings you a little closer with some style.

Et tu computer?

The card reader includes a three port USB hub, perfect for those with wired controllers or other things looking for a hook up. It is always a bonus to be able to plug things in without having to access the cramped port at the back. With everything from hard drives to controllers being USB connected, an extra USB port is something that will always come in handy.

The card reader also allows you to connect to Smart Media, Compact Flash, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, and Secure Digital. Unfortunately you can only connect to one type of media at a time due to the USB limitations. USB Spec says that up to four USB ports can be fully powered on a single port on the host machine.  Since the Multi-Reader 360 has only three USB ports, the card reader is likely connected to the fourth port internally and thus can only read one card at a time.

The Multi-Reader 360 also works with the following file types through the Xbox 360.

Audio Files mp3, wav, wma
Picture Files bmp, gif, jpeg, jpg, png, tif, tiff
Playlists wpl, m3u
Video Files wmv

Setup and Use

Fool-Proof!

Although the device worked perfectly using the included fool-proof instructions, the Xbox 360’s finicky file recognition proved to be a major obstacle. I also had a difficult time connecting to Nyko tech support for answers about Xbox 360 connectivity. Although the majority of their products are plug and play, it would have been nice to be able to get someone on the phone.

Final Thoughts

Without being able to transfer MP3s to the hard drive, or being able to recognize most movie files, the device unfortunately has one arm tied behind its back. On the bright side of things you can still play the mp3s, look at photos on your TV, and connect more USB devices. The Multi-Reader also works with your PC too, just in case you get that urge to go back to it. Overall, it's a thoughtful addition to your arsenal of Xbox 360 goodies.

The Good

  • Cool looking in an Xbox 360 way
  • USB ports are always accessible
  • If you have wired controllers, you no longer need to hook them up to the back of the console
  • Works with your PC too
  • All your major memory cards are readable
  • Xbox 360 slideshow is great for vacation pictures when used with the card from your digital camera.
  • Included instructions are foolproof

The Bad

  • Device feels quite delicate so care is needed when handling it.
  • No info on supported file types in the instructions, and no one at tech support to get them from unfortunately.

The Ugly

  • The Xbox 360 cannot transfer mp3s to the hard drive, play most video formats, and in general do half of the things it should be able to do with this device!

Overall: 7.5/10.0
