NYKO is known for building
some of the coolest gaming accessories out there. We saw a whole ton of
them at
CES
2007 in Las Vegas this year. Though, to be completely honest, I really wasn’t all that excited about this one. The idea of printing my own faceplate didn’t strike me as being something I would be all that interested in. Although the finished product was far from production quality (my HP inkjet is about a decade old), creating a faceplate with my
favourite booth babes was surprisingly fun!
All that and a bag of chips! (chips not included)
The Gameface faceplate creation program (Mac and PC versions included) consists of a template, in the shape of the 360 faceplate, and an elementary layering system. By adding layers of pictures to the template, you create your faceplate. The tools allow you to change the scale (in percentage), the contrast, the brightness, and to rotate. There are also some common editing features such as invert,
sepia, gray scale, blur, flip horizontal, flip vertical, and transparent white. You basically just drag the pictures to your desired position.
It might be ugly, but it's mine!
The software lacks the ability to do much more than put different pictures into a collage. Ideally one would use
photo editing software to fancy up the pictures first, and then apply it to the gameface layer editor. This can be done by editing the collage in a 300X870 format and then applying the finished product as a single layer. The editor unfortunately does not allow you to select between different layers; once you add a new one, the old one is stuck.
The Verdict
 Hellooooo nurse!
Most of the fun for me came in seeing my favourite
CES 2007
Booth Babes come to life in an extremely tantalizing faceplate. Not a fan of the creative process?
NYKO has an extensive library of community created faceplates that are not only extremely well done, but will give you a wide variety of choice when it comes to making your Xbox
360 look good. NYKO has also taken the liberty of providing you six ready made faceplates (all red, camouflage, and others) that are surprisingly cool to go with the 20 blank sheets that are included.
If you've run out of other cool things to buy for your system, this one might
not be a bad final touch.
The GOOD
- Includes 6 ready made faceplates (just in case your printer is not up to snuff)
- Includes 20 blank sheets (enough ammo to try different things)
- Huge community created online archive of ready-made plates to download and print - The actual plastic faceplate holder is of more solid construction than other single serve faceplates
- Cool to see your creation come to life
The BAD
- You really need do a decent printer to print a decent faceplate
- Faceplate program really requires external editing software to be effective
The UGLY
- In the editing software you cannot go back to layers after you add new ones. Oh well, guess you will have to start ALL OVER AGAIN!!!
Overall: 8.0/10
