CoolerMaster NotePal P1 Laptop Cooler Review

  Submitted: 01-23-2007

 Summary:
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire… No, this isn’t a Christmas carol, it’s my laptop and it is having some heat problems. Can this cooler save me from the laptop hotpants? Let's check it out!

With its handle and colouring, it's a fabulous accessory for every outfit

For anyone using a laptop, whether it is for work, play, or school, laptop heat is an uncomfortable fact of life. Even though placing the laptop on a desk helps with the discomfort, the underlying problem still remains. The heat reduces the life of your laptop and makes your computer slower due to the CPU throttling down to maintain temperatures. It must be stopped!  CoolerMaster seems to have an answer.  Let's see if it's the right one!

First Impressions

A funky looking device

Upon first glance, I have to admit the thing looked sort of goofy. From its weird lunchbox packaging, to the "Grimace" like colouring of it, I was almost expecting a toy to pop out.  With the funky sloped design of the unit itself, I was left wondering what real effect this little thing would have on my beast of a laptop.

Speaking of the beast, my laptop is a Dell Inspiron 9300. It’s 17 inch widescreen combined with a nine cell battery lithium ion battery that wasn't recalled thankfully.  However, it creates quite the heating element. The item was immediately buried underneath my monster of a laptop, and again, it left me wondering if it was up to the task I had in mind for it.

The Notepal P1 is powered by a standard USB port on your laptop.  Although most laptops have a USB port these days, the orientation of the port may leave the included USB cable a bit short so watch for that. Also, instead of robbing you of a USB port, the Notepal P1 includes an extra port to replace the one it stole.  The main power button is to the right of the USB port (big silver button).  Fan speed is not adjustable however.
